Registration notes: The Maura Tartan was designed by Isle of Cumbrae Distillers as part of a gin label for their Maura Handcrafted Scottish Gin. An ancient Celtic name meaning ‘Star of the Sea’, Maura is intended to celebrate Scotland’s women, who helped shape its history, legends, and stories of the sea. It is also to commemorate St. Maura, a devotee of St. Columba, who settled on Great Cumbrae in the 7th Century, devoting her life to the religious instruction of young girls to help bring Christianity to the West of Scotland.
