In 1831, Catherine McAuley founded the Religious Sisters of Mercy (RSM) in Ireland. They formed Salve Regina in 1934 after The State of Rhode Island granted them a charter. Salve Regina welcomed its first class in 1947, becoming coeducational in 1973, and achieving university status in 1991. Colours: 3 gold threads for University’s mission to work toward a world that is harmonious, just, and merciful; 47 light blue threads represent 1947; dark green is intended to represent the University’s 80 acre oceanfront campus, a level II Arboretum; 21 black threads for Salve's 21 historic structures; 8 light green threads for the original 8 RSM faculty; 90 navy threads for the 90th Anniversary of Salve receiving its Charter and 8 white threads for Salve's 8 presidents.
