Bringing Home the Tartan competition!
Winner announced
Maxine MacIver from Heriot-Watt University was named as the winner of the
design competition, Bringing Home the Tartan! with a close-fitting catsuit from
her Melvina collection. Katherine Butler, also from Heriot-Watt University, was
the runner-up with a male outfit entitled Urban Reiver.
The ten short listed entries, as listed below, were modelled on the catwalk at
the Harvey Nichols Autumn/Winter Fashion Show at Multrees Walk on 6th October.
The winner and runner-up were presented with cash prizes of £750 and £250
respectively by George Mackenzie, the Keeper of the Scottish Register of
Tartans. The winners will also receive a two week work placement, organised
through the Scottish Textiles Academic Group project and Skillfast-UK.

Finalists designs online
Nearly 100 entries were received from fashion and design students in Scotland
for Bringing Home the Tartan! Students designed outfits or accessories for
Homecoming 2009 inspired by tartans included on the Register. These entries
were assessed by a panel of judges from universities and colleges in Scotland
along with representatives of the tartan industry against the criteria set out
in the competition brief (imaginative interpretation of the theme of
Homecoming, evidence of research on the Scottish Register of Tartans and the
use of tartan in their design, flair and originality in the design, and it's
ability to promote Scotland in a positive, creative and upmarket way).

Scottish Register of Tartans Advisory Group
The Scottish Register of Tartans Advisory Group has been created by the Keeper
to provide advice on issues relating to tartan. In addition, it will help
to forge effective collaboration between the Register and the wider tartan
industry. Membership of the group
is by the invitation of the Keeper, and can include academics, industry and
heritage representatives who have an interest in and knowledge of
tartan. The group met for the first time on 1 May 2009, discussing a range
of relevant issues and topics. The Keeper will keep website subscribers
up-to-date with news and developments via. an electronic newsletter.
Scottish Register of Tartans
The Scottish Register of Tartans was launched
on 5th February 2009. It is a national repository of tartan
designs and an on-line website database facility maintained by the National
Archives of Scotland, an executive agency of the Scottish Government.
