Registration notes:	The Stuart of Bute tartan as used by the family today is based on the description contained in the Sobieski Stewarts’ ‘Vestiarium Scoticum’ (1842). The ‘Vestiarium Scoticum’ contains details of a number of clan and family tartans which the Sobieski Stewarts’ claimed were detailed in a 16th century manuscript in the possession of their father. It appears that this tartan only gained popularity with the family in the latter part of the 20th century. There have been variations with a dark red or maroon rather than a red sett however this shade did not meet with the approval of the Bute family. Lord Bute is the current Clan Chief of the Stuarts of Bute and the owner of Bute Fabrics, which has redeveloped the Stuart of Bute tartan in 2013 and woven it in a contemporary range of colours. A sample of the contemporary Stuart of Bute tartan is preserved in the National Records of Scotland.
