Registration notes:	This tartan appears in the portrait of Francis MacNab of MacNab by Raeburn c1810. A specimen was included in the Highland Society of London’s collection 1815-22 where it is labelled ‘Old MacNab’. The entry in W and A Smith's 1850 publication 'Authenticated Tartans of the Clans & Families of Scotland' reads: 'We received our specimen of the Tartan from the Manufacturer who made it for the old Chief of the Clan.' As a result, this is sometimes (incorrectly) referred to as the ‘Chief’s sett’. The manufacturer would have been Wilsons of Bannockburn who were probably responsible for the design c1800. They regarded this as the genuine MacNab tartan.
