Registration notes: This design is based on the Roxburgh Red tartan to mark the historic link between South Georgia and the famous British explorer Captain James Cook. Cook landed on the island in 1775 and his father was a farm labourer in Roxburghshire. Colours: blue is intended to represent the vastness of the South Atlantic Ocean; red represents the fisheries patrol vessel; green is intended to represent the biologically diverse coastal strip of the island; yellow is for the millions of penguins that make it their home; purple is for the abundant burnet plant which colours the coastal fringe; white represents the ice and the glaciers that dominate the interior and shape South Georgia's landforms and grey represents the seven former whaling sites, not just for the whales of yesteryear but also the vast number of birds and seals that breed on the islands and the fish that live in what are now a Marine Protected Areas.
