Registration notes: The Corps of Royal Engineers Tartan celebrates all past and present personnel and achievements attached to the Corps of Royal Engineers, since its formation in 1716. After expansion and many expeditions around the world, the Corps of Royal Engineers was formally established in 1856. The design features dark blue and crimson of the Corps of Royal Engineers Stable Belt and silvery grey denotes the crest buckle on their stable belt. Black is for continual respect for all fallen Corps of Royal Engineers comrades. Royal Engineer soldiers are called ‘Sappers’. Sappers originates from the French word Sappe and became connected with military engineering during the 17th century. Trenches and tunnels, called ‘Saps’, were engineered to cause the walls of forts under siege to collapse, and their diggers became known as ‘Sappers’. Today Sappers are multi-skilled soldiers, combat engineers and tradesmen, providing essential support to all areas of defence in peacetime and on operations.
