Registration notes: This tartan represents the Benedictine Abbey “Our Lady of the Scots”, located in Vienna, Austria, which became known as the Scottish Abbey. The tartan’s name refers to the founding charter by Henry II, known as ‘Jasomirgott’ , who made it explicit that only monks from “Scotia major” were to be admitted: solos “elegimus scottos”. The Scottos tartan owes its pattern to the history and the architecture of the Scots Church: green, the ground colour, symbolises the Irish origins of the monks who founded the monastery; blue, red, and yellow stripes provide a contrast to the green; blue is the colour of the sky as well as of the coat of Mary: Our Lady of the Scots; red is associated with love and fire; yellow represents the light of the sun. In its proportions, the pattern follows the western façade of the Scots Church. The green corresponds to the naves, the red stripes mark the main nave, the broad blue stripes mirror the pillars on the façade, and the yellow stripes flank the church portal.
Woven Sample: A woven sample of this tartan has been received by the Scottish Register of Tartans for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.
