Registration notes: The Deaf community tartan was designed by the Tayside Deaf community in consultation with the wider Scottish grassroots Deaf community, the Scottish Council on Deafness and members of the Cross Party Group on Deafness. It represents the Deaf community, language and culture within Scotland and across the world - with the use of strong bold colours and a strong geometric sett. The purple and violet represents creativity, pride, and independence. Pink represents friendship and approachability. Blue represents trust, loyalty, confidence and intelligence. Grey represents maturity and responsibility. The Deaf community in Scotland and beyond wish to celebrate this fact by having its own tartan for their community, culture and language. They are hoping it can be enjoyed across the UK and with all Deaf sign language users worldwide too. The tartan will provide a unique symbol of identity, instil greater self-confidence and make a statement to the hearing world – we are proud of our heritage. The Deaf community tartan will be an iconic moment in the history of the Deaf community at home and worldwide. This tartan represents significant empowerment by the Scottish Deaf community who have been isolated and marginalised for generations. It will form the basis of a social enterprise where Deaf people will produce and market tartan products to the worldwide Deaf community and supporters, and hearing users of the language.
