Tartan date: 25/09/2009
Registration date: 18 May 2010
Category: Corporate

Registration notes: The tartan was derived from the Bruce tartan in honour of William Murray Bruce (1954-2010) who was the former Pipe Major and Piper with the Moorabbin City Pipe Band, Melbourne, Australia. Originally from Kinross, Scotland, Bill was a third generation “William Bruce” piper. After the war in 1947, his grandfather became Pipe Major of the 2nd Galashiels Boys Brigade Pipe Band and taught Bill’s father to play the pipes, along with many others. The band saved up clothing coupons to purchase 80 yards of Bruce tartan to outfit the band. When Bill moved to Melbourne he joined the Moorabbin who coincidently also wore the Bruce tartan. In honour of Bill’s contribution to the band over 30 years and his extensive teaching of most of its members in that time, the Moorabbin City Pipe Band decided to have the William Bruce tartan made. Bill passed away on 13th March 2010 after several years of ill health, through most of which he played his pipes.
